OYSTER RECYCLING PROGRAM

Offer Your Shell to Enhance Restoration (OYSTER)

Shunk Gulley Oyster Bar Kicks Off the Inaugural Fundraiser

Benefiting Local Charities and Impacting our Environment

This year-round fundraiser offers a unique opportunity for our guests

to leave their mark on Walton County in a positive way.

SANTA ROSA BEACH, FL:

Shunk Gulley Oyster Bar 30A is all about community. Oyster populations have declined in many places worldwide and by participating in this unique year-round fundraiser, you can help make an impact! Offering guests near and far the opportunity to personalize an oyster shell for a donation of $5, these shells will be used as building blocks to construct new oyster reef habitats that are not only good for our environment, but good for your plate.

Partnering with the Choctawhatchee Basin Alliance (CBA) on this year round initiative, the Offer Your Shell to Enhance Restoration (OYSTER) shell recycling program thrives with help from the local community. Shunk Gulley Oyster Bar is one of the local seafood restaurants that donates its shucked oyster shells that would otherwise end up in a landfill to be used as the building blocks to construct oyster reefs and restore oyster populations.

“You may ask, ‘Why does an oyster shell need to be recycled and what does CBA do with it?’ Well, it’s all about the bay,” says Chad Perko, CBA’s Ecology Technician. “Our community is home to the Choctawhatchee Bay, that stretches 30 miles from east to west and consists of brackish waters that are home to abundant wildlife and diverse recreational opportunities, making it the lifeblood of our area’s current and future ecological and economic health.“

“Of all the creatures that call the Choctawhatchee Bay home, the humble oyster is perhaps the most important to the bay’s health. Oysters act as Mother Nature’s water filtration system, improving the water clarity and quality, which benefits the entire bay and by extension our community,” ellaborates Perko.

We are offering the unique opportunity to our guests, near and far, to personalize an oyster shell with a message to the sealife, a drawing or decorated however they would like at The Shunk Gulley Gift Shop for a donation of $5. 100% of funds raised will go directly back to various local non-profits throughout the year. To participate in this fundraiser you can visit the Shunk Gulley Gift Shop, or you can email
April@shunkgulley.com to contribute from afar.
